Remote Lands Introduces Insider Access and Unforgettable Journeys to Laos

Insider Access to the least developed and most enigmatic of the three former French Indochinese states

(NEW YORK, NY, April 2, 2007) - Remote Lands is America's only luxury travel designer focused exclusively on Asia. Having lived and worked in Asia for many years, the company's founders have formed one-of-a-kind relationships with influential local people, and a valuable network that enables them to offer richly varied yet totally personalized experiences in this fascinating continent. The company is now providing guests with the opportunity to experience Lao People's Democratic Republic, the least developed and most enigmatic of the three former French Indochinese states. From the ruggedly beautiful Annamite highlands and hill tribe people to the rich lowlands of the Mekong River Valley, Laos still remains relatively untouched by modern outside influence, and is charming in its isolation. Remote Lands' tailor-made Laos journeys begin at $1,000 per couple per day based on double occupancy, plus international airfare, and go up from there depending on private jet charters, helicopters, VIP audiences, and personal staff including private chefs, concierges and other professionals.

Remote Lands is able to give each guest traveling to Asia a behind-the-scenes journey though this exotic continent's cultures and traditions. Entree to private events such as marriages, death ceremonies, coming-of-age celebrations and other local customs gives guests a colorful vignette of local Asian life. While for many, visiting a country as secluded as Laos may be a daunting thought, Remote Lands embraces the opportunity to unveil the intricacies of this mostly Buddhist country to adventurous travelers.

Possible itinerary highlights include:

  • Join the Buddhist monks for their early morning alms procession in the charming UNESCO World Heritage Site town of Luang Prabang, the former capital of the Kingdom of Laos. Monks get their daily food from the local townspeople. Afterwards accompany one of the senior monks to his private chambers and have a simple breakfast of rice and tea with him, while learning about his daily life in the monastery.
  • Have dinner in Laos's capital city Vientiane, with a prominent local family at their home. One of Laos's top chefs will prepare a delicious meal and give an informal cooking demonstration. The traditional Laotian meal will include sticky rice, which is rolled into a ball and dipped into chili paste, then eaten together with fresh local vegetables, fish and meat, accompanied by French wine and Beer Lao.
  • Take a helicopter or drive to Luang Namtha in northern Laos near the borders of Burma and China. Visit a village of the Black Tai hill tribes who are famous for their beautiful silk weaving. Try a hand at the weaving, visit the school and meet the children, and join one of the families for lunch and conversation about their life, culture, livelihood and religious beliefs - they are animists (not Buddhists) and practice various forms of ancestor and spirit worship.
  • Fly to southern Laos and take a boat down the Mekong River to the lovely and undiscovered island of Don Khone. Play or swim with the delightful Irrawaddy river dolphins, an endangered species indigenous to this area and to Cambodia. See the spectacular Khone Papeng Falls, Southeast Asia's largest waterfall, in this beautiful remote area where few tourists ever venture.
  • Take a day trip from Luang Prabang south to Vang Vieng, a gorgeous little town on the Nam Song river world famous for its amazing limestone karst scenery. Go rock climbing, kayaking or inner tubing on the river surrounded by majestic cliffs in this lovely mountainous region. Wander through the countryside and visit a Hmong hill tribe village, and have lunch with a local family in their home.

For travelers interested in other parts of Asia, Remote Lands can arrange bespoke journeys all over this culturally diverse region, including a rare glimpse into the lives of the Orang Asli tribals of Borneo who hunt for food with bamboo blowpipes; the thousand year-old temples in Pagan, one of the great man-made wonders of the world; and the unrivalled beach resorts of Phuket and Bali. The company focuses entirely on luxury Asian travel, and can also plan customized trips throughout the Asian continent, including tailor-made journeys by chartered private jet.

In addition to Remote Lands' bespoke travel services, the Company's second line of business is its private jet journeys with celebrity speakers (on specified dates) on the themes of Cuisine & Culture, Art & Architecture, and Golf. The first such journey, slated for October 13-26th 2007, features best-selling authors Gael Greene and Simon Winchester, and focuses on Asian Cuisine & Culture.

Remote Lands actively promotes socially responsible tourism and donates five percent of its profits directly to local charities in Asian countries for sustainable development tourism projects. The company also supports geotourism, which sustains and enhances the geographical character of a place - its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents - that helps build a sense of national identity and pride.
